New to Shooting AR500 Steel Targets? Here’s Everything You Need to Know

Shooting steel targets adds instant excitement to the range. That loud, unmistakable “ping” provides instant feedback and a major confidence boost. Whether you’re a new shooter or a seasoned marksman, steel targets make practice more satisfying and effective.

If you’re new to AR500 steel targets, this guide covers everything you need to get started safely and effectively.

Why Shooters Love Steel Targets

Steel targets aren’t just fun—they offer several big advantages over traditional paper targets:

  • Instant feedback: Hear and see your hits immediately.
  • Training value: Excellent for building accuracy and speed.
  • Long-lasting: Built to withstand wear and tear, repeated use, and weather.
  • Low-maintenance: Leave them outside—there’s no need to constantly replace targets.
  • Versatile: Shoot with handguns, rifles, and shotguns (with proper setup).
  • Portable: Many steel target setups are lightweight and easy to transport.
  • Customizable: Available in gongs, silhouettes, torsos, dueling trees, and more.

Is Shooting Steel Safe?

Yes, shooting steel targets is safe as long as you follow the proper guidelines. The key is using the right material (like AR500 steel), setting everything up correctly, and always putting safety first. Here are some important rules to follow:

1. Use the Right Steel

  • AR500 or AR550: Industry standards for most calibers.
  • Avoid mild steel: It’s too soft and can deform or fragment dangerously.
  • Never use scrap metal or curved surfaces (like I-beams): These increase ricochet risks.

2. Proper Target Setup

  • Whether fixed or swinging, AR500 steel targets should always be hung at least 20° downward. A properly angled target helps absorb the bullet’s shock and deflect bullet fragments into the ground.
  • NEVER shoot a flat, immobile steel target. Targets mounted parallel to the shooter pose a serious ricochet risk.

3. Wear Eye Protection

  • ALWAYS wear safety glasses because bullet fragments are known to bounce back.

4. Use the Right Ammo

Not all ammunition is safe for steel targets. Using the wrong type can damage the target—or worse, create serious safety hazards.

Avoid these types of ammo:

  • Steer clear of steel core, armor-piercing, incendiary, tracer rounds, and birdshot or buckshot (can ricochet dangerously). These ammo types can damage targets, penetrate targets, or even start fires if you aren’t careful.

Safe options for AR500 steel targets:

  • Handgun: Most pistol ammunition, including standard FMJ (Full Metal Jacket) rounds
  • Rifle: Many types of rifle ammunition, including standard FMJ rounds (non-magnum) at 100+ yards
  • Frangible rounds: Ideal for close-range shooting because they break apart on impact
  • Shotguns: Generally not recommended unless you’re using slugs or buckshot with targets specifically rated for shotgun use.

5. Follow Safe Shooting Distances

  • Pistols: Minimum of 25 yards recommended.
  • Rifles: 100+ yards recommended.
  • Magnum rifles: 200+ yards recommended.

What Is AR500 Steel?

AR500 is a type of tough, abrasion-resistant (AR) steel with a hardness rating of 500 on the Brinell scale. That means it’s hard enough to resist dents, scratches, and impact damage. Because of its strength and durability, AR500 is commonly used for steel targets and other high-impact applications. It’s the go-to material when long-lasting performance matters.

Why AR500 Is the Go-To Choice

  • Hard: Highly resistant to penetration and surface abrasion.
  • Tough: Resists cracking and deformation.
  • Affordable: Cheaper than ceramic or composite alternatives.
  • Widely available: Easy to source.
  • Reliable: With proper care, it lasts for years.

AR500 Steel Target Types

Static Targets

Static targets are fixed or hanging steel targets that remain stationary during shooting. Typically angled downward to deflect bullets safely, they’re ideal for accuracy training and repeated drills. Common examples include gongs and silhouette (torso) plates.
