How to Hang AR500 Steel Targets

So, you’ve finally got your AR500 steel targets in hand—now what? Properly hanging your targets is key to safety, longevity, and getting that satisfying ring when you shoot. This guide covers the best ways to hang steel targets, from choosing the right angle to selecting the best mounting method. Follow these tips to maximize your shooting experience while staying safe.

Target Angle: The Key to Safety

The angle of your steel target is crucial for safety. A properly angled target helps absorb the bullet’s shock and deflect bullet fragments into the ground, reducing the risk of ricochets.

• Minimum angle: Whether fixed or swinging, AR500 steel targets should always be hung at least 20 degrees downward.

• Why? Angling the target downward ensures that spent bullet fragments hit the ground rather than bouncing back.

• Avoid flat mounting: Targets mounted parallel to the shooter pose a serious ricochet risk. Always make sure you angle your targets downward.

Proper Height: Keeping Shots Contained

Target height is another important safety factor. Placing a target too high can send missed shots over the backstop, which can be very dangerous for bystanders.

• Recommended height: The top of the target should be no more than 4 feet from the ground.

• Why? This keeps the target at a natural downward shooting angle, so missed shots hit the ground instead of flying off uncontrollably.

• Bonus: Lower targets naturally create a better angle, further improving safety.

Hang Targets Loosely for Longevity & Sound

Letting AR500 steel targets hang loosely allows them to move freely when struck, absorbing bullet energy and reducing wear and tear for a longer lifespan. It also enhances the sound quality of your hits.

• Why hang loosely?

  • Extends target lifespan by absorbing impact energy
  • Creates a louder, longer-lasting “ping”

• Best method: Use chains or rubber straps so the target swings freely when hit.

Hanging with Chains or Rubber Straps

Chains and rubber straps are great for hanging steel targets because they are easy to set up and allow for natural movement.

• Mounting tip:

  • Attach chains or straps to the back of the target to protect them from direct hits.
  • Use one nut to secure the target with bolts and washers on the front side and use two nuts to secure the bolts on each side of the chain (from the backside). This introduces a slight downward tilt and helps deflect bullet fragments safely toward the ground and improves overall safety.

• Best hardware: Use 2.5-inch or longer bolts with washers for secure attachment.

• Common setups:

  • Horizontal 2×4 sawhorse stands
  • Wood and metal conduit combinations

Mounting Brackets for Stability

If you prefer a fixed setup, mounting brackets provide a stable option.

• Best angle: Look for brackets that hold targets at a 20-degree downward tilt.

• Avoid: Mounting brackets that force the target to be rigid. Some movement is necessary for safety and durability.

• Popular materials: Wood 2×4s or metal fence posts.

Using Bolts for Secure Mounting

High-quality bolts are essential for keeping your targets in place and preventing failures mid-session.

• Best choice: Use grade 8 bolts for maximum strength and secure attachment.

• Mounting tip: Tightening the nuts on the non-shooting side creates a slight downward angle, directing bullet splatter downward.

• Tip: If your target has square bolt holes, use carriage bolts for a more secure fit. Carriage bolts also have round heads, reducing sharp edges that could cause ricochets.

Safe Shooting Distances

To avoid dangerous ricochets, keep an appropriate distance from your AR500 steel targets. The ideal distance depends on the firearm’s caliber—generally, larger calibers require greater distances.

• Pistols: A minimum distance of 25 yards is recommended for light to medium pistol calibers.

• Rifles: A minimum distance of 100 yards is recommended for rifles (keep muzzle velocity under 3,000 fps).

• Avoid: Don’t shoot armor-piercing rounds, birdshot, or buckshot at your steel targets.

• Check your targets: Never shoot at damaged or pitted steel.
